What are macronutrients?

Food provides the body with various nutrients that have a role to provide energy and/or necessary for the growth and functioning of our body.

Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are macronutrients (“macro” means large), so these are the nutrients that should be present in relatively large amounts in the diet because they provide our bodies with energy, as well as building blocks for growth and maintenance of body structure.

Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients and are essential nutrients that the body needs in small amounts (“micro” – small) to function properly.

Although water is not always included in the strict definition of a nutrient, it is essential for health and life.

Understanding macronutrients, their function, and why some people need different ratios of nutrients compared to others can help you optimize your diet to your individual needs. This way the body will get the best in the right amounts and proportions. Diet is important for diseases such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, obesity, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, gout, and others.
